Hello everyone,

today, I wanted to talk about the topic that’s close to my heart and something that has been my hobby for more than 10 years; roleplaying. It started as something I thought would be just to kill time and let me use, at least, a bit of my creativity. I didn’t think it would end up being a hobby that will last long as this. But, getting lost in the world of my character that I’m currently roleplaying is exactly what I need sometimes.

So, to start off.. What exactly is a roleplaying? According to Google, roleplaying is:

  1. the acting out of the part of a particular person or character, for example as a technique in training or psychotherapy.”specific guidelines need to followed for role playing to be effective”
    • PSYCHOLOGY – the unconscious acting out of a particular role in accordance with the perceived expectations of society.
  2. participation in a role-playing game.

There are many different times of roleplaying; from roleplaying your original character, roleplaying idols, tabletop roleplay games (DND) to even LARP (live action roleplay). A lot of roleplay moved online nowadays and that’s exactly how I started. Online roleplay is, sadly, also only roleplay that I’ve tried. There are a lot of “groups” online that let you roleplay on various sites; Tumblr, Mewe, Discord, etc. But you can also set up your character yourself and do it like that. But to come to the original question..

IS ROLEPAY CONSIDERED WRITING?

Yes, yes it is! No matter are we roleplaying our own original character or an idol, we are still writing the text and being creative. Especially if you are doing alternative universe (AU) roleplay where you have to think of the whole setting. It’s maybe easier not to roleplay an AU right at the beginning but a lot of times, it is actually easier. Most of the times, you are free to build up the character you are roleplaying however you want (even if you want to roleplay an idol) and also, you can do world building on your own or with the person you are roleplaying with.

A lot of people will argue that roleplaying isn’t considered creative writing but why not? The most arguments I’ve heard against it being writing are mostly something along the lines “Creative writers think they know how to roleplay”. Which tells me only one thing; the person who does this, has superior complex. Roleplaying could be considered co-authoring because you are not writing the roleplay on your own. You are writing it with someone. Yes, roleplay isn’t planned out like the story writing is but that’s exactly the charm of it. You just have to have a mindset that you are NOT the only one writing the roleplay. There is someone else involved, be it another person or even few more people.

Don’t let anyone tell you that roleplaying isn’t writing. Maybe it could also be considered other form of creativity but it is writing as well. Sometimes, it is only thing that helps us from the writing block and to make us feel like we are still writing. So, if you’d like to roleplay and do it, then just go for it. There are quite a few RP guides online that you can look up, but here are some to maybe start off:
